The Nina & Beni chair is a marvel of design and innovation. Two steam-bent strips cantilever over the seat, serving first as legs, then armrests, and finally molding to the lumbar area. This efficient use of materials results in a chair that is as comfortable as it is visually striking. The chair is made from 100% sustainably sourced forests, highlighting Maza's commitment to environmental responsibility.
The creation of the Nina & Beni chair involved the use of a 5-axis CNC to cut two molds, which were then used to steam bend the solid wood strips into form. A set of CNC-cut counter molds were used to create the 3D lamination. This complex process resulted in a chair with a unique geometry that sets it apart from other designs.
The chair's specifications further underscore its uniqueness. With dimensions of W 560 x H 720 x L 500mm and a weight of 8 kg (unboxed), the chair is compact yet sturdy. It is available in ash, cherry, oak, or walnut, with a finish of natural oils and waxes. The seat is removable and interchangeable, adding to the chair's functionality.
The Nina & Beni chair was first exhibited at The Stockholm Furniture fair in January, followed by the London design fair in September. The project, which began in September 2019, is a testament to Maza's dedication to sustainable design. He uses wood because it is the best short carbon cycle material, and the complex shapes are steam-bent to create as little waste as possible.
The chair's design was not without its challenges. The most difficult part was designing and building the 3-dimensional molds needed to construct the chair. However, the end result is a chair that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also a testament to sustainable design.
The Nina & Beni chair was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations. This award is a testament to Maza's prodigious talent and commitment to advancing art, design, and technology through sustainable practices.
